Doric Steevensz

Amsterdam — born on Sumatra, shaped by Indonesia, Italy and the Netherlands

I was born in 1951 on Sumatra, to a French mother and a Dutch-Indonesian father. In 1960 we were expelled from the country by Sukarno and his followers; we first lived in Italy, then moved to the Netherlands in 1965. I studied psychology (majoring in statistics and methodology) and worked until my retirement in 2013 as a management consultant and project manager. I live in Amsterdam with Geri; our daughter Sophie runs a gymnastics school. I speak and write Dutch, French, Italian and English.

This site brings together three things I occupy myself with, among others.: writing, making images, and keeping an online museum alive.

01Writing

Writing is what this site is all about. Here I collect my essays, reflections, and texts — personal, reflective, sometimes about art and aesthetics, sometimes about social and psychological topics. You will find the various sections in the menu.

02Yestin Gray — visual work

godean.nl/yestingray

Under the name Yestin Gray I make digital images — starting out as a non-verbal, aesthetic pursuit with no story or concept, driven purely by colour and form. With the arrival of intelligent image generators, my focus also shifted toward figurative work: images that touch something of my own life experience, past, present, and thoughts about the future. Fractals, Kandinsky, Hopper and Hockney remain constant reference points; technique evolves, feeling does not.

03Indisch Museum

indischmuseum.com

Ten years ago I started the Indisch Museum: a digital platform for the art, culture and heritage of the Indo-Dutch diaspora. Built without subsidy, single-handedly, into an extensive archive of artists, stories, timelines and collections related to the former Dutch East Indies. In recent years it has grown into a worldwide network — the Global Indo Diaspora — with partners such as the Dutch Australian Cultural Centre in Australia and artists in the United States.
